Rubber, a Film About A Killer Tire?!

23 Feb

Ah, where to begin? Last year Hollywood broke a record for the lowest number of tickets sold, and analysts believe this was due to the amount of low quality films being made. Almost every movie shared weak plots, exploitation of 3D, and outright unoriginal ideas. Moviegoers and industry insiders called for an original film to break the cycle. Luckily however, French director Quentin Dupieux was already finishing production on his latest film Rubber by the end of 2009.  The film was shown at Cannes Critic’s Week and was picked up by Magnet Releases for US distribution despite receiving almost completely negative reviews. The film is about a tire, yes a tire, named Robert that possesses psychic powers and has the ability to make heads explode. Yes, you read that right. The film is definitely original to say the least but is it a true indie masterpiece or another attempt to cash in on the current state of Hollywood? In terms of Independent films, this film is just about as indie as you can get. The film was shot, written, directed, and edited by Quentin Dupieux himself.

The film was shot entirely on a Canon 5D Mark II in the small desert community known as the Antelope Valley. The film definitely won’t be winning any major awards but is encouragement for any indie filmmaker. Making movies in Hollywood is all about profits and business, making a movie as an independent filmmaker allows you to do basically whatever you want. All the pressure comes from within, as you are the only one responsible for whether your film gets made or not. Now is the best time for independent filmmakers to join the industry.

Rubber gives hope to indie filmmakers by reiterating the old cliche that anything is possible. The film premieres “On Demand” on Friday February 25th, and is going into limited release on April 1st (which happens to be April fools day). Check out the trailer below.
