Napoleon Dynamite Television Show to Hit FOX in the Fall

18 May

If you and I have anything in common then you’re probably a fan of the 2004 cult comedy hit, Napoleon Dynamite. The feature length film was actually based on a short film created by Jared Hess while attending college. The film was titled Peluca but featured the same characters that appear in Napoleon Dynamite. The short film gained notoriety at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival which in turn led to the production of the feature length version. Napoleon Dynamite was shot for only $400,000. Upon its release the film gained a cult following and made over $45 million dollars at the box office. The DVD release of the film only added to the popularity and further increased the audience.

For many, the film brought new life to the increasingly exploited and unoriginal comedy genre. These characteristics helped launch the careers of Jon Heder and Jared Hess. As television begins its transition into a new season of programs, many were delighted to see something that very few, if any expected. Fox had ordered  six episodes of a Napoleon Dynamite animated series.  The show is expected to air in the Fall of 2011 during FOX’s Sunday night Animation Domination block. It is reported that almost all of the original cast members from the film will  provide voices for the characters in the television series.

With only a six episode season, I feel that the show will have trouble finding a core audience. This show will no doubt generate a ton of buzz but after the show airs then disappears so suddenly I doubt many will remember to watch. What made Napoleon Dynamite work so well was the originality and the story to be told within 90 minutes. Lets face it, the characters in Napoleon Dynamite are weak at best. To revolve and entire series around the characters would be a strange concept but I have faith that Jared Hess and his production staff will be able to pull it off.

We may have a new hit on our hands. What do you think? Join the discussion and leave a comment below.

I’ve noticed you blog about alot of indie films. Have you, by chance, ever seen Eagle and Shark?

I haven’t gotten a chance to see it but I’ve heard that it was supposed to be great. The story behind the film is pretty cool too. Independent films are so awesome lol

I, unfortunatley, have also not gotten a chance to see it, but I plan on it sometime soon. I’m a fan of Jermaine Clement (the lead) from his music so I figured I better see how good an actor he is 😛
