Yes ladies and gentlemen, you read that correctly. Hugely popular teen star Justin Beiber will be getting a 3D movie about his life. The New York Post has reported that Justin Bieber has titled his film “Never Say Never” and is slated for release in Februrary. The film is directed by Jon Chu, who believes the film to be worth a watch. The film contains footage from Bieber’s concerts as well as his own input. Both Chu and Bieber are calling the film a documentary that celebrates the life of Bieber.
In addition to the highly publicised film, is a memoir written by Bieber. In my opinion, a memoir is something that should be written as a reflection on your life from an older age. Simply at age 16 you haven’t lived long enough to even reflect on the early stages of your life and now with the upcoming documentary I feel like this is just another publicity stunt.
I simply can’t take this type of film seriously. I feel as though it is simply an attempt to cash in on all this “Bieber” fever. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Justin Bieber, I just feel as though this type of film shouldn’t be made during this stage of Bieber’s life. The guy is only 16 years old and hasn’t done anything particularly spectacular. He’s reached a level of stardom that isn’t legendary or even surprising. Throughout history, teen stars captivate the imaginations of teens and children. Most notably The Backstreet Boys through the late 90s and early 2000s. Now they are almost completely out of the public eye. Justin Bieber may be no exception.
The film is of no means a documentary. It is simply another 3D concert along the lines of the Jonas Brothers 3D concert released in 2009. Never Say Never may feature true events, and footage from Bieber’s concerts but this doesn’t make it a documentary. Director Jon Chu is most notably known for his work on the Step Up series and other fictional works. The film will most likely make money due to the droves of teenage fans, but it will have done nothing that hasn’t already been done before. It will be interesting to see how the film turns out in the end.
